Bad. Very Bad.

I eventually got used to Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. After all, I wasn't that invested in Spiderman and Peter's supposed to be a kind of average Joe character.

But Tobey Maguire as Rick Hunter?

nononononononononononononono. NO!

They aren't allowed to cast my childhood crushes with actors that I don't find sexy. Somebody needs to tell them that.

On the bright side, we don't really know what the movie will be (also, IMO, Maguire is too old to play Rick Hunter, who's a pretty young guy) so we're not sure if the movie includes Rick Hunter.

hmmm...that's a good point.

Still not thrilled about the combination of Maguire and Robotech, though.

Yeah, I'm not so thrilled, either. Though, I could see Maguire as stiff Scott Bernard.

So I understood when they made a Transformer movie and I really understood when they made another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. And the rumors of a G.I. Joe movie? Okay.

But Robotech? I mean, hardly anyone I know really knows about Robotech. I thought it was safe from Hollywood. And Tobey Maguire.

They must be interested in it because of the veritechs.

One thing that I'd find interesting, if they adapt Macross, is that it's very unlike American "aliens invade" stories. I mean, this is the one case where aliens are defeated by a love song -- literally in the case of the Japanese "Do You Remember Love?"

Of course, the right person should realize that's exactly why it should be a film...

Really? I know a lot of people that at least know about it.

Although, maybe that's not so true anymore if I don't count my brother and you two :)

One additional thought I meant to make earlier... it sounds like Maguire had a bigger part in this deal than just getting cast, so there's the possibility that he's a Robotech fan who pushed for the studio to option the series.

Which probably means people won't mention that Rick's a really young character, younger than Maguire can play.

While at college, when talking to other anime fans (maybe a year or three younger than me) they didn't know about Robotech.

ADV did a rerelease of Macross (actually their first time releasing, as another company did before) and I have no idea how well it sold, though I haven't heard too much buzz about it.

I'm probably just talking to the wrong people. ;)

Can I just say how much fun this has been? I don't get to talk about Robotech with people outside of my roommate too often.
